Noon Day Gun

Heard a gun-shot while travelling along the coast near Sino Plaza at noon? That is the Noon Day Gun which is fired off at 12 noon every day on the waterfront of Causeway Bay. This one-gun salute tradition is said to have started in 1840s, when a Royal Naval Officer became annoyed at the tendency of Jardines employees to fire off a gunshot to welcome the head of the company entering the port – as gun salutes are reserved for military commanders only. As punishment, Jardines was required to fire a one-shot salute every day at noon, for perpetuity, which has now become a local tradition. Other than the noon day shot, there is also a one-shot ceremony at midnight of every New Year's Eve to celebrate the coming year.
